Where are the imported steel billet gone in China?

Alan Yang

According to customs statistics, from January to August 2020, imported steel billets were 11.3744 million tons, an increase of 10.3678 million tons over the same period last year (an increase of 1030.0%). Although the increase in imported billets is significant, compared to the domestic crude steel supply from January to August, the proportion of imported billets is less than 2%;

90% of imported billets are plain billets and slabs, which mainly are used to produce steel products such as rebar, wire rod (coil), section steel, medium and heavy plate, hot coil (strip), etc.

From the perspective of product output in the third quarter, imported billets have a greater impact on the marginal output increase of some varieties.
